8. Have you not considered the one who argued with Ibrahim (AS) about his Lord [merely] because Allāh had given him kingship? [2:258] Who is that King?
Answer: King Nimrod in Babylone
After the miraculous escape from fire by the Mercy of Allah Azwazal, Ibrahim (AS) was brought to the king. Mujahid stated that the king who disputed with Ibrahim (AS) was the King Nimrod, son of Canaan, son of Kush, son of Sam, son of Noah (AS).
Nimrod denied the existence of a god other than himself. He was rebellious, arrogant, transgresser, ruled the country for a long time. Because Allah had given him the kingdom, he asked Ibrahim (AS) to produce proof that Allah exists.
He asked the Prophet Ibrahim (AS) "Who is your Lord?" Ibrahim (AS) answered, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death,"(2:258). Nimrod arrogantly and defiantly claimed that he was the creator and pretended that it was he who give life and cause death."
Nimrod cannot think the One, the Most Powerful other than himself. He proved by bringing, "Two men who deserved execution, he commanded to kill one of them and pardoned the second man. He said, "This is how I bring life and death.''
Then Ibrahim (AS) asked to Nimrod, "Verily, Allah brings the sun from the east; then bring it you from the west". So he was overwhelmed [by astonish- ment], and Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people. [2:258]
The king was aware of his weakness, inadequacy and that he was not able to reply to Ibrahim's request, he was idle, silent and unable to comment. Therefore, the proof was established against him. He was utterly defeated. The king had experianced Allah's anger and suffered a severe torment by a small insect that went inside his brain. All praise is due to Allah!
