20. What is Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz?
Al-Lawh al-Mahfuz means "The Preserved
Tablet." [Al-Burooj 85:22]. It is a divine record containing the whole
program of the universe. Allah created the pen first and commanded it to write.
It wrote this book with His Command. Everything that happened and that is going
to happen till the Last day is recorded. Hence it is also called as
‘Kitabul-Qadar.
Nobody can touch or see except the purified angels.
Nobody can change its content except the Allah Almighty. It is a record beyond
human imagination. It is as wide as a hundred year walk. Scholars of Tafseer as
well as others mentioned some reported citations on the authority of Ibn Abbas
(RA): “It is of red rubies, with its upper end tied to the Throne (of Allah)
and its lower end in the lap of an angel. Its script is light, and its pen is
light. Allah The Almighty glances at it
three-hundred and thirty-six times every day.
With each glance, He does what He Wills; He exalts a humble person,
humiliates an honored one, enriches a poor person, impoverishes a rich person,
gives life to someone, causes death to another and does whatever else He Wills.
There is nothing worthy of worship except Him.”
“The Preserved Tablet” is among the higher group
(i.e., angels). From this record, nothing can be added or deleted, nothing
altered or distorted. Its words and letters are so well protected that the
meaning if its content is not twisted. It is a clearly recorded book.
Shayathaeen have no power to reach it. Subhanallah! As in the case of Zaboor,
Taurath and Injeel, nobody can delete or add or change the verses of Quran,
since it is preserved in this book.
Allah says in Quran about this record as:
•"And with Him are the keys of the Ghaib (all
that is hidden), none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in (or
on) the earth and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but he knows it. There is not a
grain in the dark- ness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written
in a Clear Record. (Al-Anaam, 6:59)
•"And there is nothing hidden in the heaven and
the earth, but is in a Clear Book" (i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). {An-Naml, 27:
75}
•"Verily, ‘We’ give life to the dead, and ‘We’
record that which they send before (them), and their traces, and all things
‘We’ have recorded with numbers (as a record) in a Clear Book." (Ya Seen,
36:12)
•"No calamity befalls on the earth or in
yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before
We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah." (Al-Hadid,
57:22)
•"We know that which the earth takes of them
(their dead bodies), and with Us is a Book preserved (the Book of Decrees).
(Qaf, 50:4)
•"And Verily, it (this Quran) is in the Mother of
the Book (i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mah- fuz), before Us, indeed Exalted, full of
Wisdom." (Az-Zukhruf, 43:4)
•"That (this Quran) is indeed an honourable
recital. In a Book well-guarded (with Allah in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh
Al-Mahfuz). Which (that Book with Allah) none can touch but the purified (i.e.
the angels)." Al-Waqia, (56: 77 to 79).
Al-Husayn bin al-Fadl was asked, “Has Allah not
pre-destined the decrees of everything before He created the heavens and
earth?” He replied, “Yes.” So it was said, “Then what is the meaning of
laylat-ul-qadr?” He said, “Bringing the decrees of everything to their
appointed times and executing the decrees of the pre-destined.”
Ibn Katheer says in the tafseer:
"On that night every matter of wisdom is
ordained.” [Al-Dukhan 44:4] “It means that on laylatul-qadr, the decrees are
transferred from al-Lawh al-Mahfuz to the (angelic) scribes who write down the
decrees of the coming year including life span, health and sickness, provision,
poverty and wealth, or any other calamities, good yields and drought, wars,
earthquakes, rain and everything that will happen until the end of the year.
Allahuthala says “Therein descend the angels and the Ruh [Jibril] by Allah’s
Permission with all Decrees” [Al-Qadr, 97:4]
The Prophet (SAW) urged us to do some acts of worship
which have an effect of increasing a person’s lifespan, such as upholding ties
of kinship, and he said that dua can repel the divine decree. The Prophet (SAW)
summed this up in one hadith: “Nothing increases one’s lifespan except righteousness
and nothing repels the divine decree except dua, and a man may be deprived of
provision by a sin that he commits.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh
ibn Maajah.
Umar bin al-Khattab said when he was circumambulating
the Kabah and weeping: “O Allah, if You have decreed that I should be doomed or
commit sin, then erase it, for You erase whatever You will, and You confirm
(whatever You will), and with You is the Mother of the Book, so make it
happiness and forgiveness.”
Al-Tabaraani The Tabi`i Abu Wa’il Shaqiq bin Salamah
often used to supplicate with these words: “O Allah, if You have decreed that
we be doomed, then erase it and decree that we be blessed. If You have decreed
that we be blessed, then confirm it for us, for You erase whatever You will and
You confirm (whatever You will), and with You is the Mother of the Book.”
