Fasting on the day of ‘Ashura

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاتة

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِٱلرَّحِيمِ

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah, (SAW) came to Madhina and he found the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura. The Prophet (SAW) asked, “What is this day you are fasting?” They said, “This is a great day in which Allah saved Musa (AS) and his people, and he drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa (AS) fasted on it due to gratitude, so we also fast on it.” The Prophet (SAW) said, “We are more worthy and closer to Musa (AS) than you.” The Prophet fasted the day of ‘Ashura and he commanded fasting on it.
