12. Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him fromthat which He willed. And if it were not for Allah checking [some] people bymeans of others, the earth would have been corrupted. (2: 251). Who is thatProphet?
Dawud was the fourth son in his family. His father sent all
his three sons to King Saul's army to fight with Goliath. He asked Dawud not to
participate in fighting but do services to soldiers in the army.
When the two armies faced each other, Goliath challenged any soldier from King Saul's army to single combat. No one had enough courage to volunteer. The king offered his pretty daughter in marriage to the man who would fight Goliath. Even with this tempting offer no soldier volunteered.
To everyone's surprise, youth Dawud stepped forward. Everybody was shocked. Saul said: "I admire your courage, but you are no match for that mighty warrior." But he told the king that he had killed a lion and bear and said humbly not to judge him by his appearance,
King Saul agreed and dressed him with armour and gave sword. He felt uncomfortable with armour that obstructed his movements. He removed the armor, then collected a few pebbles and his sling, he began to walk towards the enemy saying "Allah will certainly protect me from this brute!"
Goliath laughed loudly by seeing young Dawud, he roared: "Are you out to playing? Or are you tired of your life? I will simply cut off your head with one swipe of my sword!" Dawud shouted back: "I face you in the name of Allah. It is not the sword that kills but the Will and Power of Allah!"
So saying, he took his sling and pebble aimed it at Goliath's forehead. He thumped to the ground, bleeding, lifeless, before he had a chance to draw his sword. Seeing this, his men took to their heels. Saul kept his word and married his daughter and took him as one of his chief advisors.
Thus the earth would indeed be full of mischief if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another.
Later, the kingship was transferred to Dawud (AS) and Allah granted Prophet hood taught him of that which He willed.
With his sweet voice he glorified Allah. Mountains and birds also glorified along with him. He gave the wisdom and revealed the Zaboor (Psalms) to him. He made iron soft to him so that he can make protective armour without fire.
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr: "The Prophet (SAW) said:
'The most beloved of fasting to Allah is the fasting of Dawud (AS) He used to fast one day and not the next through out the year. And
the most beloved of prayer to Allah is the prayer of Dawud. He used to sleep
half the night, spend one-third of the night in prayer and sleep for one-sixth
of it.'" [Sahih al-Bukhari, 3420. Sunan an-Nasa'i 1630]
