Haruth and Maruth were the angels during Sulaiman's rule came to earth in human form at Babylon.People like to learn magic from them. They taught magic to anyone by saying "We are for trial, so believe not by learning this magic from us". "Still people learn that by which they cause separation between man & wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's permission.'' The ayath continued "And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed, they knew that the buyers of it would have no share in the Hereafter." (2:102).

Numerous stories have been transmitted about these angels, all centered on the basic story:

The angels in the heaven were astonished to see the sinful and disobedient act of human beings.Allah informed them if they were in that position they will also do the same. So all the angels selected the most pious and obedient Haruth and Maruth. Allah gave them the attributes of human and send them to earth. Allah commanded them to avoid wine, idolatry, fornication & murder. Harut and Marut eventually did all these sins after seeing a beautiful young girl called Zohra. Hence Allah punished them for their sinful act.

Lesson to be learnt:

It is human to err. Surrender to Allah and remember Him He will remember you. He will prevent you from doing sins. To achieve nearness to Divinity,

     *  believe Allah,

     *  obey Him and

     *  repent and ask Him forgiveness.
