21. Ramzan Quiz

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاتة 

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِٱلرَّحِيمِ

21. Which ayath of the Quran, Khalif Usman (RA) was reciting when he was assassinated?

Answer: His blood splashed on the copy of the Quran, he was reading upon Verse 137 of Surah Baqarah.

فَاِنْ اٰمَنُوْا بِمِثْلِ مَآ اٰمَنْتُمْ بِهٖ فَقَدِ اهْتَدَوْا  وَاِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَاِنَّمَا هُمْ فِىْ شِقَاقٍ‌  فَسَيَكْفِيْکَهُمُ اللّٰهُ  وَهُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ‏

"And Allah will suffice you for defense against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower."(2:137).

Uthman (RA), the son-in- law of the Prophet ﷺ by he married the two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ one after another. He bought the well of Bir Rumah from a Yahood (Jew) for a large price and supplied water free to anyone who came. He gave his land for the expansion of Masjidae Nabavi. He made arrangement to make the "Musaf" (written copy of Quran) in one copy to avoid the differences in dialect that was existed during his time in and around Arabia.

Such a man was surrounded by rebels, for forty days, without giving him water and food. He was not allowed to pray in the Masjidae Nabavi. All the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, who were in large number willing to fight with the rebels, but Usman (RA) did not want them to shed the blood of the Muslims for his sake. He fasted on those forty days in his house. His wife Nuila was with him. Some of the youngsters like Abdullah bin Umar (RA), Hasan ibn Ali (RA). Husain ibn Ali (RA) were allowed to be with him for his protection.

Before his assassination Usman (RA) saw a dream. He told the people “They are going to kill me today.” That was Friday,18th of Dhul-Hijjah 35AH (17 June, 656 AD). Then he said, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ in my dream. Abu Bakr (RA) and Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) were with him, and the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘O Usman! We are waiting to join us to break the fast."

On that day he sends all the Companions who were accompanying him for his safety. He opened the door and started reading Quran while the rebels came inside the house. One of them came and caught his beard in his hand. Then another with a stick stroked him. Another took his sword. Usman (RA) raised his hand as a protective reflex. His wife came for his rescue. But the rebel cut off his hand and the fingers of his wife. Usman said, "I swear by Allah that the hand you have cut was the hand that wrote the Quran first". Then another one came and cut his head.

After three days, the body was taken to Jannathul Baqi.  They never allowed to burry there. Then he was taken to the nearby grave yard of Yahood. But later this place was extented to Jannathul Baqi, a grave yard of Sahabas and Muslims.
