25. Which act is undesirable (makruh) during rukhu and Sujudh?
Answer: To recite Quran, but can say supplications from Quran.
Ibn 'Abbas (RA) reported that Prophet ﷺ said: "I have been forbidden to recite the Quran in the state of bowing and prostration. So whilst rukhu (bowing), extol the Lord in it, and while you are in prostration (sujudh) strive your hardest supplicating, as it is most likely that you will be responded to." [Sahih Muslim, 479a Book 4, Hadith 236]. Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) also reported, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to recite quran in a state of bowing and prostration. [Sahih Muslim, 480a Book 4, Hadith 238]
The following hadhees indicates that the Prophet ﷺ derived the the words of Exaltation in rukhu and sujud from Quranic verses:
Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: When [فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ] "Glorify the name of your mighty Lord" [56:96] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Use it when bowing, and when [سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى] "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" [87:1] was revealed, he said: Use it when prostrating yourself." [Sunan Abi Dawud, 869].
Imaam Al-Zayla'ee wrote in his book 'Tabyeen Al-Haqaa'eq', 'The four Imaams have agreed that reciting Quran whilst bowing or prostrating is undesirable.' Imaam Al-Qayloobi, a Shaafi'ee scholar said: 'Reciting Quran in the prayer other than the time of standing is undesirable if one intends the recitation of the Quran.' Imaam Al-Saawi, a Maaliki scholar said: 'Recitation of Quran whilst bowing or prostrating is undesirable except if one intends supplication in prostration.'
It is proved in a narration of the Prophet ﷺ that supplicating whilst bowing is allowed. 'Ayesha (RA) said: "The Prophet ﷺ used to say in his bowing and prostrations, "Subhaanaka-Allaahummah Rabbanaa wa-bihamdika Allaahumma-ighfirli." (How perfect You are O Allah, our Lord, and I praise You. O Allah, forgive me)." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Imaam Ibn Hajar quoted from Imaam ibn Daqeeq Al-'Eed both: 'It is deduced from the narration that supplicating whilst bowing is also allowed."
It was said that it is because the Quran is the noblest of speech, because it is the Word of Allah, and the position of bowing and prostration is one of humility and submission on the part of the worshipper, so it is more appropriate not to recite the Word of Allah in these two positions. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa). In these two positions where people can be so close to Allah, they can praise Him and supplicate and get what they need.
