36. "Whoever is an
enemy to Allah, His Angels, His Messengers .................. &
..................... then verily, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers."
Answer: Jibreel
(AS) and Mikaeel (AS). (2:98).
ﺑﺴْـــــــﻢِﷲِﺍﻟﺮَّﺣْﻤَﻦِﺍلرَّﺣِﻴﻢ
Allah explains before this ayath about Jibreel (AS) bringing the Quran to the Prophet (ﷺ) only by the command of Allah. So anybody saying Jibreel (AS) as enemy, are the disbelievers. Allah is an enemy to such people. Say (O Muhammad ﷺ) "Whoever is an enemy to Jibreel (AS) (let him die in his fury), for indeed he has brought this Quran down to your heart by Allah's Permission, confirming what came before it (the Taurat and the Injeel) and guidance and glad tidings for the believers. (2:97).
Belief in angels is one of
the six pillars of Eeman/belief without which the faith is not complete. Who ver
does not believe in any of these pillars is not a "Mumin". These
pillars are: Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and
the predestination, that is what comes from Allah. Allah chooses Messengers
from angels and from men. (22:75). Belief in all the messengers is part of our
faith. Disbelieving in any one of them will lead to "Kufr". This
Ayath was about the Jews who take Jibeel (AS) as their enemy and that Mika'eel
(AS) as their friend.
Different ahadhees
narrate that this ayath was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ at the time:
1. When Abdullah bin Salam
asked three questions to confirm whether he is the prophet or not. The Prophet ﷺ))
said, just now Jibreel (AS) brought answers. Hearing that Abdullah bin Salam
told, "Jibreel has been considered as the enemy to Jews." Just then
Allah's Messenger(ﷺ) received this ayath
from Allah.
2. Abu Bakr al-Asfahani
informed us > al-Hafiz Abul-Shaykh > Abu Yahya al- Razi > Sahl ibn
'Uthm- an > 'Ali ibn Mushir > Daw ud > al-Sha'bi who said: “Said 'Umar
ibn al-Khattab (RA), 'I used to go to the Jews upon their study of the Taurah
and was amazed to see the conformity of the Quran with the Taurah and of the
Taurah with the Quran.... On one occasion their chief said: 'We do know that
Mohammad (ﷺ)
is Allah's Messenger!' I
said: 'You are the one who shall be subject to the worst form of destruction if
you all know that he is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and then do not follow him'. They
said: 'We have an enemy among the angels as we have friend from amongst them'.
I asked: 'Who is your enemy and who is your friend?' They said: 'Our enemy is
Gabriel who is the angel of harshness and coarseness, burden and hardship'. I
asked: ’And who is your friend?' They said: 'Michael who is the angel of
tenderness, gentleness and ease'. I said: 'In that case I bear witness that it
is not allowable for Gabriel to declare enmity to the friends of Michael nor is
it allowable for Michael to be a friend to the enemies of Gabriel ......"
I then stood up and left them.
When I narrated this to the Prophet (ﷺ) he said: "O, the son of Khattab! Shall I recite the verses regard- ing this, that are revealed by Allah." And he recited the verses (2:97 & 2:98).
3. Imam Ahmad recorded
that Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) said:
When “A group of Jews came
to Allah’s Prophet (ﷺ) and said, ‘Talk to us about some things we will ask you
and which only a Prophet (ﷺ) would know.’ They asked four questions. They said,
‘Tell us now about your Wali among the angels, for this is when we either
follow or shun you.’ He said, ‘My Wali (who brings down the revelation from
Allah) is Jibreel (AS), and Allah never sent a Prophet, but Jibril is his
Wali.’ They said, ‘We then shun you. Had you a Wali other than Jibreel, we
would have followed you.'” On that, Allah, the Exalted revealed this ayath.
This ayath is a threat to
the enemies of Jibril (AS). It is an act of disobedience to Allah. With that
they earn Allah's enmity. Such people will lose both the life of this world as
well as the Hereafter. Allah says,"Whoever takes a friend of Mine as an
enemy, I shall wage war on him."
Both the Sahih recorded
the supplication of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) during the Thahajud:
"O Allah, Lord of
Jibreel, Mikaeel & Israfeel, Creator of the heavens and earth and Knower of
the seen and the unseen! You judge between Your servants regarding what they
differ in, so direct me to the truth which they differ on, by Your leave.
Verily, You guide whom You will to the straight path."
