4. "And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allāh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way." This verse points out to whom?
Answer: Prophet Mohammad (SAW)'s adopted son Zayd ibn Harithah (RA)
The story of Zayd (RA):
Once Zayd’s mother was travelling with his son, on their way, they were attacked by their enemy tribe. They captured the boy and sold in the market of Ukaadh. A nephew of Bibi Khathija (RA) named Hakim ibn Huzaam bought him and gifted this young boy to her. Zyad (AS) was gifted to the Prophet (SAW) by Bibi Khadija (RA).
Prophet (SAW) freed him from slavery and treated him not as a slave but as his own son. They were always together. Źayd was called as the “beloved (habibi) of the Mohammad (SAW)”. He was the first youth to become Muslim, when revelation came to the Prophet (SAW).
For years Zayd’s father Harithah was searching for his son. His tribal people when visited Makkah for annual pilgrimage, recognized Zayd (RA) and informed his father. Harithah came to Makkah with his brother and met the Prophet (SAW) and required him to return his son, for a ransom.
Prophet (SAW) told them if Zayd (RA) wished to go along with his father, he will be sent without ransom. However, if he desired to stay with him, then Harithah must allow him to do so. On Zayd (RA) being called for he recognized his father and his uncle. But he asserted firmly, “I would never leave Muhammad (SAW) for anything in this world.”
He took Zayd (RA) to Kabah and publicly proclaimed that he had adopted Zayd (RA) as his son and as an heir. He should be called as Zayd ibn Muhammad. Harithah was satisfied that his son was with the honorable family of the Quraish.
Allahuthala revealed the above said ayath along with this: “Nor has He made your adopted sons your real sons. That is but your saying with your mouths. But Allah says the truth, and He guides to the (Right) Path.” (33:4). "Call the adopted sons by their father's names; this is more equitable with Allah; but if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brethren in faith and your friends; and there is no blame on you concerning that in which you made a mistake, but (concerning) that which your hearts do purposely (blame may rest on you), and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (33:5). Zayd (RA) was from then onwards known by his real name as Zyad ibn Harithah (RA).
Hence when this ruling was abrogated, Allah made it permissible for a man to marry the ex-wife of his adopted son. and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) married Zaynab bint Jahsh, the divorced wife of Zayd bin Harithah (RA)
In Islam an adopted son, if breast fed only can be treated as their own son in every respect, as Mahrams and also in inheritence.
